Bing Crosby at Del Mar

Del Mar Picks July 29th - Bing Crosby Preview

by Johnny Lowe

Grade 1 Bing Crosby Led by Sprint Champ Drefong Draws Giant Field Saturday’s Grade 1 Bing Crosby sprint going 6 furongs on the dirt, is set with a field of 9 outstanding sprinters. Trainer Bob Baffert teams up with jockey Mike Smith to attempt yet another Grade 1 victory sending out Breeders Cup Sprint Champion Drefong. Baffert and Smith are no strangers to the winners circle in Grade 1 races this year including the Dubai World Cup they have won 6 of them. Drefong is a winner in 5 out of 6 lifetime and is a multiple Grade 1 winner. He’s earned a cool 1.2 million and looks to add to it with the purse of 300k in here. He’s by Gio Ponti who was a very versatile horse running well on various surfaces while winning almost 6.2 million dollars. Gio Ponti is out of Chipeta Springs a very successful broodmare. She foaled 12 and had 8 winners. Drefong likes to be towards the front, breaking from post position #2 he looks to be out towards the front early on. Drefong will be facing a sizeable field of able and ready contenders to try and overthrow the Champ in his first start back since November. Second choice in the morning line wager is Roy H. Running for the connections of trainer Peter Miller and jockey Paco Lopez ( who is shipping in from the east coast to ride this race) Roy H is on a 3 race win streak including the Grade 2 TruNorth where he won by 2 and 1/2 lengths in stylish fashion. Roy H draws a favorable post towards the outside with his off the pace style. Miller is also sending out two others, St Joe Bay and Solid Wager. The last time these two horses ran against each other they deadheaded. St Joe Bay looks to press the pace early while Solid Wager joins a long list of closers. Ransom the Moon for trainer Philip D’amato and jockey Flavien Prat look to get the better of the Baffert favorite after earlier in the month losing by a neck to the very game Danzing Candy. Ransom the Moon is by Malibu Moon sire of 2013 Kentucky Derby winner Orb out of Count to Three By Red Ransom. Count to Three won nearly 400k in her career and has foaled 3 winners out of 4 foals. Ransom the Moon in his last 2 starts beat Kobe’s Back by 6 and 1/2 lengths and Moe Candy by 2 and 1/2 lengths. Longshot Denman’s Call has a chance if he can fire like he did in march beating Masochistic by a length. Magic Taste at 50-1 rounds out the field of 9.
